Organizers invite session abstracts for the 2025 Alaska Outdoor and Environmental Education Symposium: Strength in Community. This in-person meeting will be held Friday, 21 February 2025 in Anchorage, Alaska.

Registration is open and includes a membership to ANROE and lunch.

This symposium is a chance to gain practical tools, share experiences, and be part of a supportive community that values connection to place and the power of outdoor experiences. Connect with a network of educators dedicated to building community, advancing professional skills, and strengthening outdoor programs that benefit all of Alaska.

The symposium focuses on three pillars and is currently accepting session proposals. All presentations will be 1 hour long.

  • Building Community: This pillar focuses on strategies and programs that strengthen connections within Alaska’s outdoor and environmental education community. Presentations under this theme will explore ways to diversify audiences and the workforce, foster cultural competence, support environmental justice, and engage with new and diverse groups. Sessions can focus on Indigenous Science, traditional knowledge, broaden our reach, and increase the relevance of outdoor education across society.
  • Professional Development: This pillar centers on advancing skills, sharing resources, and keeping up with key trends in environmental and outdoor education. Presentations in this area will offer insights into important topics, provide valuable resources and networking opportunities, and showcase the latest approaches to teaching outdoors in Alaska. Sessions may cover diverse methods and subjects, from science and art integration to partnerships that enhance learning experiences
  • Capacity Building: This pillar is dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness and reach of environmental and outdoor education in Alaska. Presentations under this theme will focus on strengthening partnerships, expanding programs, and building a more resilient EE/OE community to broaden our collective impact. Sessions may explore strategies for recruiting diverse educators, securing grants, and creating sustainable growth within the field.

This symposium is presented by Alaska Natural Resource and Outdoor Education Association (ANROE) and Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS), both organizations committed to building capacity and community across Alaska.
