ARCUS hosted Jessica Mejia (Syracuse University) for our last Arctic Research Seminar of the year. Jessica discussed her recent work using observations and models of crevasse growth to understand the transport of water to the base of glaciers and ice sheets.

The Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook (SIWO) is a resource for Alaska Native subsistence hunters, coastal communities, and others, providing weekly reports during the spring sea-ice season with information on weather and sea-ice conditions in the northern Bering Sea and southern Chukchi Sea. The SIWO, which began in 2010, celebrates the partnerships and contributors that continue to make this program a success heading into its 15th season.

The October 2024 issue of Witness Community Highlights is now available. This issue include a series of video highlights featuring outstanding leaders from ARCUS institutional members. These videos offer an inside look at some of the current research and community-driven work shaping the future of Arctic science.

ARCUS is now accepting nominations for individuals to serve on its Board of Directors. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of Arctic research and guide ARCUS activities. Nominations, including self-nominations, are due by Monday, 4 November 2024.

The abbreviated 2024 September Sea Ice Outlook (SIO) Report is now available online. This report, developed by Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN) team members, is limited to the pan-Arctic
forecasts.

Join us for the ARCUS Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 29 October 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Alaska Time). This virtual event, held via Zoom, is an essential gathering for our Members, Board of Directors, staff, and all interested individuals. The meeting provides a valuable opportunity to discuss key Arctic research and education issues, as well as collaboration opportunities within the community. This is an open event—everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of ARCUS membership status!

The August 2024 issue of Witness Community Highlights is now available. This issue includes video interviews with Arctic Indigenous Scholars Craig Chythlook and Taniesha Moses during their trip to Washington, DC to engage with decision-makers and policy-makers, as well as an article about the Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook (SIWO) Partners Workshop that took place in Nome.

Join us for Cultural Preservation and Community Building Through Art, a Tundra Talk featuring a panel of Alaskan artists: Susan Qilgialuk Hope, Amy Ahnaughuq Topkok, and Bobby Qalutaksraq Brower. These talented artists will explore how traditional practices, such as Inupiaq skin-sewing, fur fashion, and indigenous art, preserve culture and strengthen community ties.

Join us for the next ARCUS Arctic Research Seminar on 9:00 am AKT on 2 October 2024! Featuring Stanislav Saas Ksenofontov of the ARCTICenter at the University of Northern Iowa, the webinar will explore " Sustainability of Indigenous Communities and Global Change: perspectives from Sakha, NE Siberia."

The Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN) invites contributions for the August 2024 Sea Ice Outlook (SIO), based on May, June, and July data. In 2024, SIO reports will focus on pan-Arctic forecasts, with other data to be shared in a post-season report in early 2025. We encourage both past contributors and new participants to submit their outlook contributions by 15 August 2024, 6:00 p.m. AKDT.

Organizations engaged in U.S. Arctic education and research are invited to apply for ARCUS membership by September 30, 2024, to be featured at the ARCUS Annual Meeting. Membership is open to academic, nonprofit, government, business, Indigenous, and international organizations involved in or interested in U.S. Arctic research.

Join us for the next ARCUS Arctic Research Seminar on 21 August 2024! Featuring Mike Koskey and Yoko Kugo from the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies at UAF, the webinar will explore "Investigations of Culture Change and Adaptation through Food Life History: Coproduction of Knowledge in Indigenous Alaska Communities to Address Issues of Food Sovereignty." Learn about their research on how climatic and socioeconomic changes are impacting food security and lifeways in Alaska.

The Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) Early Career Conference Funding Award supports US-based, early career researchers and students to participate in meetings and events relevant to Arctic research. This award specifically aims to increase participation of underrepresented minorities and those new to Arctic research—presenting is not required. Travel awards will cover airfare, lodging, registration fees, and other relevant expenses. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, 1 August 2024.

The May 2024 issue of Witness Community Highlights is now available. This issue includes three articles, Permafrost and Infrastructure Symposium: Merging Science, Engineering, and Community-Based Knowledge, Get Involved: Collaboration to Support Arctic Research, and a Witness Community Highlights video, Collaborative Work on Impacts of Permafrost on Civil Infrastructure.

ARCUS Board members, institutional representatives, and staff will be participating in the Arctic Congress 2024 conference taking place 29 May - 3 June 2024. If you are attending, we look forward to connecting with you and invite you to join us at one of our community sessions or presentation.

Join the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S for an open Arctic research community call on Wednesday, 8 May 2024, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. AKDT, focused on Bering Strait Regional Research Coordination.

The ARCUS Board of Directors announces a leadership transition within the organization. Helen Wiggins, the current Executive Director, will step down from her position as of 1 May 2024 and Audrey Taylor, PhD, will succeed her as Interim Executive Director.

The March 2024 issue of Witness Community Highlights is now available. This issue includes US Permafrost Association Launches Family Care Program and a Witness Community Highlights video, Permafrost Impacts in the Arctic.

Join us on Thursday, March 28th at 9:00 am AKT for an ARCUS webinar featuring Yaari Walker & Christopher Marianetti. Explore captivating sounds of the Beringia region, from Bowhead whale communication to Buryat throat singing, captured through recent research and oral histories.

A report is now available on the Bridging Arctic Gateways workshop co-hosted by ARCUS, UAF, and UMaine in November 2023, aimed at fostering Arctic research connections between the Alaskan Arctic and the North Atlantic.

We are pleased to announce the release of the ARCUS Annual Report for 2023. Get to know the researchers who make up the ARCUS community and discover the range of activities that have defined our collective efforts over the past year.

ARCUS Member Representatives elected five individuals to the ARCUS Board of Directors to serve three-year terms from 2024–2026. Congratulations to Helena Buurman (U. of Alaska Fairbanks), Chelsea Koch (American University), and Johanna Ikävalko (Arctic Centre), and re-elected members Kaare Sikuaq Erickson (Ikaaġun Engagement) and Peter Webley (U. of Alaska Fairbanks). ARCUS is grateful for the leadership and service they bring to Arctic research and education!

The Community and Citizen Science in the Far North 2024 Conference, to be held Wednesday, 17 April – Thursday, 18 April 2024, is open for general registrations. The virtual conference will focus on sharing, networking, and discussing the various aspects of conducting community and citizen science research in the Arctic.
